NYPD: Subway "Shovings" May Be an Initiation Right by City's Gangs
Police in New York City are perplexed by a rash of subway "shovings" (people shoved to the tracks in front of oncoming trains) over the past several months. Today another incident occurred where a man was shoved to the tracks in Lower Manhattan. Fortunately, the motorman was able to stop the train in time allowing the victim to scramble back up on the platform and escape serious injury. Many point to the homeless, especially the hoard of lunatics that have made the subway a sort of subterranean asylum, apparently able to run amuck freely without fear of being nabbed by authorities. Now I ride the subways daily and I can tell you it's scarier now than the mid 70's when the life expectancy of a subway rider was years less than a non-rider. At every stop there is at least one demented soul to be seen screaming, yelling, threatening so forth.
